Philip is currently Chairman of Waterford and CEO of Cutting Edge Music Group.
In 1993, Philip founded an entertainment marketing company, Cutting Edge Marketing Solutions which focused on the acquisition and exploitation of exclusive rights to manufacture celebrity fashion brands distributed by leading mail order companies in the United Kingdom, throughout Europe and in the USA.
In 2000 Philip founded Cutting Edge Music Holdings, an integrated music services enterprise that specializes in packaging, producing and publishing music for the global film, television and advertising industries. In the last ten years, Cutting Edge has emerged as the market leader in music for the audiovisual marketplace. Through Cutting Edge, Philip was also the primary architect of an asset management business and private equity fund launched in 2008 which is an investment vehicle that finances the music budgets of films and television programs in exchange for the intellectual property rights to all original music featured therein and acquires business that fit vertically into the niche. In 2012 the asset management business expanded its operations and now manages in excess of $100m of third party capital.
In 2009, Cutting Edge formed a music planning and buying business Cord World Wide, Philip is Chairman of Cord, which services the “sonic” needs for advertising, branding agencies as well as brands themselves. In 2011 Philip engineered a strategic joint venture for Cutting Edge with advertising giant McCann-Erikson.
Darren began his career in the entertainment business in 1988 working in various capacities in the finance, marketing, promotion, and production departments of EMI Music and Lorimar Television.
In 1992, Darren co-founded and was President of Salmon Music Group, an independent record label and music publishing company. Darren presided over the record division including A&R, production and distribution, as well as the publishing group, managing the exploitation of Salmon’s catalog of copyrights into feature films, television shows, and commercials. Salmon launched the careers of numerous urban musical acts, including two Top 10 Billboard charting artists.
In 1996, Darren co-founder and served as Managing Director of ICE Capital Corp., a boutique entertainment advisory firm servicing leading independent companies in the music and film industries. ICE Capital was an early player in intellectual property asset-based financing, underwriting asset-backed debt using music catalogs and royalties as collateral.
In 2013, Darren joined Cutting Edge Group as a Managing Partner in the asset management division, Conduct. Conduct finances the music budgets of films and television programs in exchange for acquiring the intellectual property rights to all original music featured therein. The investment fund currently has assets under management of $100 million. At the beginning of 2013, Conduct acquired Varèse Sarabande Records, the leading independent record label releasing film and television soundtracks. Darren currently serves as the CEO of the label.
As Managing Director of Anxious Music, the music publishing company launched by David A. Stewart, Phil built a substantial music catalogue that was sold to Universal in 1999. In 2000, He joined Edel Publishing as Managing Director (United Kingdom) and Vice President International. Here, he was responsible for the creation of the United Kingdom-based company and the development of European publishing affiliates. This catalogue was sold to Warner/Chappell in 2003. In addition to music publishing, Phil has worked as a record producer, re-mixer, artist manager, music supervisor, internet entrepreneur and lecturer in Music Business and has advised venture capital funds on the acquisition of copyright catalogues.
Phil joined Cutting Edge in 2005 and has helped to oversee the growth of the business to its current position as a leading provider of music to the media sector in both Europe and North America. Phil recently has acted as Executive Producer on a number of film productions including Oscar winner “The King’s Speech”. Phil is also a board member of the Music Publisher’s Association and sits on the PRS Commercial Affairs Group. He is currently responsible for the company’s music rights activities.
James joined Cutting Edge Group in 2006, setting up a US operation for the London based firm and currently oversees US investments for the company’s music and film funds.
James began his career in the film and television business at the BBC in London. He subsequently spent the following 20 years working in production on many prestigious films and television dramas/shows. James went on to produce films and TV series in the UK including feature films “Darkness Falls”, and heist caper “Circus” for Sony Pictures. James then moved to Los Angeles where he worked on projects for multiple studios and created a reality TV series for VH1.
James sources films and TV projects for potential investment and is responsible for assessing each production’s potential from both US box office and international box office perspective. James is also a partner in the company’s recently formed production arm Cutting Edge Originals, a production entity set up to develop and produce music driven films.
Tara sources and negotiates investment deals on behalf of the Conduct LA office. Since 2011, she has been responsible for music financing deals for over 20 films including Arbitrage, Don Jon, End Of Watch, Filth, Looper, Non-Stop, The Quiet Ones, Side Effects, Snitch, Spring Breakers and upcoming John Wick, Selfless, Sicario, and Woman In Black: Angel Of Death.
Tara has negotiated overall slate deals for Conduct with production companies such as Exclusive Media, Endgame Entertainment, Groundswell Productions, and mostly recently, Thunder Road Pictures.
Tara also oversees music supervision services for CORD on all LA-based projects, including feature films, TV shows, video games, trailers, and brand campaigns. Music department services include bespoke composition, production, sonic branding, licensing, clearance, legal advice, soundtrack album releases and more.
In 2012, Tara executive produced Unfinished Song, starring Terence Stamp, Vanessa Redgrave, Gemma Arterton and Christopher Eccelston. The British comedy-musical has grossed over $7 million worldwide and featured an original song performed by Celine Dion, which was included on her 2013 “Loved Me Back To Life” album.
After the success of Unfinished Song, Cutting Edge Group created a new division within the group to develop and produce music-based feature films. Cutting Edge Originals was launched at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and is headed by Tara and James Gibb, a fellow Cutting Edge Group executive and veteran independent producer.
Conduct primarily invests in the music budgets of independent films in exchange for the associated music rights. It also looks to acquire and operate businesses that can increase the value of its owned assets. In 2013, it acquired Varese Sarabande Records, the leading independent record label releasing film & television soundtracks. The funds have ~$100mn AUM.
Tim also works as an analyst on the acquisition of third party Film, TV and Music assets where Cutting Edge has ~$40mn AUM.
Prior to joining Cutting Edge Tim was Vice President of the US Equity Sales team at Merrill Lynch, based in London.
He was a music scholar at Oxford University where he graduated with an MA in History in 2006.
Claudia has a BSc. (Hons) in Experimental Psychology from the University of Nottingham and an MA in Music Business from New York University. Currently Claudia is a Label Manager for Conduct, based in New York. She is responsible for overseeing the development of new musical talent and distributing it worldwide, namely through Conduct’s held intellectual property assets in film and television.
Claudia also works with the music supervision services department, CORD to provide original music for placement in feature films, TV shows, video games, trailers and brand campaigns.
In 2014, Conduct formed a joint venture with Michelle Phan creating the record label Shift Music Group which Claudia has a key role in overseeing.
